Storm of Infinite Beauty

Julian Maclean – A Storm of Infinite Beauty
The title of this story comes from one line said by the main character to describe the life of one of her famous ancestors. The main character is the curator of a museum about this ancestor who was a well known actress. She comes across information that the ancestor may have had a secret child, who would be the curator’s closest relative. The process of researching brings her into contact with another researcher, that leads to a possible love affair. But it also leads her to Alaska, where the ancestor was sent to have the illegitimate child.
The continued story follows their research in uncovering the details and looking for this secret child. In the process they learn about a major earthquake that took place in Alaska that determined the fates of the actress and her child.
Overall, the book was enjoyable, and very engaging. Our book club discussion followed the Book Club questions provided by the author asking about the main character’s decisions about relationships and choices. In addition, it brought up how women’s rights have changed over the years, and how the ancestors choices may be different in the present atmosphere.
I was still left with one unanswered question for the author after reading the book – Where was the secret child buried? And why didn’t the researchers look for his grave?
