When we first started meeting as a book club, we all had favorite authors and genre of books, but we all agreed that we liked action novels. One author that was consistent and well known among the group was James Patterson. As we discussed his books, someone pointed out that he was starting to co-write with other authors. So we looked up on Amazon the books by James Patterson. When we noticed that one of celebrities Patterson co-wrote with was Dolly Parton. We also noticed that he wrote a couple with President Bill Clinton. So we decided to read the Dolly Parton one as a comparison to Patterson’s other works. Then we’d follow it with the two by President Clinton to be able to do a sort of author study.

Run, Rose, Run was a story of a young musician who had run TO Nashville trying to escape something in her past. At first she’s on the street corners, then played in a local bar in Nashville. She is befriended by a young artist who eventually leads her to a mentor. As the story goes on, she’s is taken under the wing of a famous musician, and learns some life lessons as her secret life from the past comes to find her.

In our critique of the book, we could see a major input from Dolly with describing the ins and outs of the music & fashion world. Many of the details of how things looked behind the scenes had to be described by someone in the field. We discussed whether we thought Dolly’s own history was reflected in the travails experienced by Rose, or whether it was Patterson’s dark, mystery writer mind that wrote in Rose’s connections to her past.

Overall, the book was enjoyable, yet not a page turner as many of Patterson’s books are. However, a quick and enjoyable read for Patterson fans who need a light break, or readers who love the music or fashion world!

Feel free to share your thoughts on the book in the comments below. Our book club would love to hear your feedback!
