Sadeqa Johnson – House of Eve
This fictional story of two young women of color, Ruby & Eleanor, in the early 1950’s, highlights the challenges of race and economic status during that time period. Through their individual stories of coming of age, through dealing with their pregnancies, and the ensuing choices and decisions, the author weaves a vivid picture of the trials of race bias. She includes in the race story the idea of different shades of blackness and how it impacted families , their experiences, and their success or lack of thereof.
Ruby is a young teen in poor economic status, and from a fractured family, trying to earn her way to college and a good job through a special program. Her many challenges in participating in the program become more complicated when she becomes pregnant.
Eleanor, on the other hand was from an affluent family and marries a light skinned doctor from a family of influence. Her challenges with infertility were handled very differently than Ruby’s challenges. The tie between them becomes the House of Eve.
Overall, the book was enjoyable. The group felt that the ending could have several endings or lead to a sequel .
