Week
1 - Introductions
Welcome
to the Mission Nutrition Project!
Your
mission in this project is to learn about what foods keep
your body healthy. You will be learning and sharing this information
with global learning partners. As we study each part of the
Food Guide Pyramid, you will take part in several activities:
-
You
will keep a food diary before we start the project, then
again at the end.
-
You
will be asked to describe foods in certain categories that
are native to your country.
-
You
will learn what others around the globe eat to stay healthy.
-
You
will use the knowledge you learned to write, and solve "Nutrition
Mysteries" for others.
- You
will graph the results of the differences in your food diary
to see if our learning helped you change the way you eat.
-
To
celebrate learning together, your teacher may plan a Multicultural
Feast (well-balanced, of course!).
This
project will last for 8 weeks. Since this is a Science project,
you will be expected to do what a scientist does-- document
your data, research, communicate with others, compare results,
and share your findings. You will have at least one assignment
each week to complete.
This
first week however, you have two small assignments. The first
assignment is to keep a food diary of what you eat throughout
this week. Your teacher will give you 5 minutes at the start
of each science class to fill out your food
diary worksheet.
As
you will be working with scientists from around the globe, your
second assignment this week is to introduce your school
and class to the rest of our project teams. Your teacher will
help you write this introduction. Be sure to tell about the
location of your school by using your global address of longitude
& latitude. You can find that information by visiting these
sites:
Times
Around the World from Kidlink
World Time Zones
While
you are at the above site, you can use them to help you figure
out your "GMT Offset Time" or what time Greenwich
Mean Time is equal to on your local clock. Greenwich Mean Time
is the time used around the globe to collaborate. You will need
to know that information when we plan our "Multicultural
Feast" at the end of the project. Then you will know what
time to meet the other participants in the chat room. So be
a good scientist and record your global address and GMT Offset
time in your notebook. Also be sure to include them in your
introduction paragraphs. When your class has written the introduction,
email it to bschulz@beaumont-publishing.com
OK.....
let's get started! Fill out those diaries, and send in that
introduction. I am looking forward to hearing from you!
