{"id":4292,"date":"2013-06-11T10:33:02","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T14:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/learningbyts.net\/WordPressBlog\/?p=4292"},"modified":"2017-04-08T10:42:31","modified_gmt":"2017-04-08T14:42:31","slug":"the-myth-of-tenure-is-hurting-students-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/learningbyts.net\/WordPressBlog\/the-myth-of-tenure-is-hurting-students-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The myth of tenure&#8230;.. is hurting students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13.5pt; color: #333333;\"><span style=\"background: white;\">The myth of tenure&#8230;.. is hurting students<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.15pt; color: #333333;\">Tenure&#8230; that word that supposedly protects teachers&#8230; the one that everyone claims keeps bad teachers in the classroom, was proven wrong today, especially in my district.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You see, I got riff&#8217;d today!\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Yep&#8230; and I have tenure and many years of experience&#8230;. so\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0if the myth is true, then it should have\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0protected me.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Even recently getting my doctorate so I&#8217;m current in my field (Computer Science), and winning a Curriculum Award from the district, and getting runner-up for best paper at a state conference, and presenting at a National conference in my field didn&#8217;t protect me.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Being in Computer Science seems to be a detriment in this district, as many of the first to be let go were Computer Science teachers with tenure.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 That&#8217;s extremely sad for our students.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 You see, we are a district that has lots of BRAC potential, touted that our county would grow with the influx of high tech positions, and it is predicted that our students will have good chances of employment in that field in this district in the next 10 years.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 But if they don&#8217;t have Computer teachers, how are they going to learn the skills needed for those positions?<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.15pt; color: #333333;\">So if those in my field and my district feel that I am sharp enough to win those awards, why didn&#8217;t they keep me?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 It all comes down to money&#8230;. our county executive cut his portion of paying for public education in the district, and the district has to rearrange its budget. I haven&#8217;t a clue about how they decided, but they are &#8220;cutting programs&#8221; and our program is the first to go.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe it has something to do with the fact that our Chief Information Officer has not supported our programs for the last several years.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe it has something to do with the perception that kids are born with technology skills (they may be, but they haven&#8217;t a clue how to make them &#8220;work&#8221;\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 for them rather than be a toy).\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Someone needs to teach them how to adapt those programs to what they are learning in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.15pt; color: #333333;\">Maybe it has something to do with the new Common Core Standards that supposedly\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0have a STEM base to them, yet don&#8217;t mention computer skills anywhere in the standards.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 They focus on Engineering, Mathematics, and Science, yet when professional development is offered, the technology piece (in particular careers in Computer Science like database administration, technical support, network engineers,\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 software engineers, programmers, are never mentioned as possible careers for kids in STEM).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.15pt; color: #333333;\">So what&#8217;s my next step?\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Not sure at this point&#8230; I&#8217;ll be exploring how I can use that newly acquired doctorate, trying my hand with writing again this summer, and exploring what retirement might look like&#8230;.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 hopefully I&#8217;ll find a window of opportunity &#8230; and\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0soar through it..\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0although\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0it won&#8217;t be one that promises &#8220;tenure&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><cite style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 9.0pt; color: #595959;\">From &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/learningbytshome.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/the-myth-of-tenure-is-hurting-students.html\">http:\/\/learningbytshome.blogspot.com\/2013\/06\/the-myth-of-tenure-is-hurting-students.html<\/a>&gt;<\/cite><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>3 comments:<\/h4>\n<div id=\"Blog1_comments-block-wrapper\">\n<dl id=\"comments-block\" class=\"avatar-comment-indent\">\n<dt id=\"c2114487702502238409\" class=\"comment-author \"><a name=\"c2114487702502238409\"><\/a><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"avatar-image-container avatar-stock\"><span dir=\"ltr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/img1.blogblog.com\/img\/blank.gif?resize=35%2C35\" alt=\"\" width=\"35\" height=\"35\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Anonymous said&#8230;Sorry to hear of your RIFF. It is truly a travesty what is happening to schools, teachers and kids. Yes, kids know how to use technology as a toy &#8211; but they need to be guided to use it as a tool, an avenue for critical thinking, an instrument in collaborative learning. These things do not happen by accident. It is truly a travesty. I completely agree that our students wont be prepared for local BRAC jobs without computer science. The BOE is the cause of the problem. The county provided the same amount of funding to the boe as it did last year.
